Process

Edward Mapplethorpe

Process presents recent works by Edward Mapplethorpe, in which he continues his investigation of the history of analogue black-and-white photography and photo and chemical processes. In a reference to Ansel Adams and his teachings on the Zone System, Mapplethorpe reduces his latest series to its pure grey values. This radical system gives rise to pure photographs that remain self-contained in their self-referentiality. This is in contrast to the series Peaches, in which he questions reproduction, tautology and the relationship between photography and the photographed object based on Roland Barthes. In each of these series, the photographic image enters into a dialogue with itself, while the medium leads to the materialization of light.
