Essential Elements

Edward Burtynsky

In the Edward Burtynsky Essential Elements exhibit, we present a variety of works from his different series. The exhibit accompanies the release of the book Essential Elements, scheduled for publication by Thames & Hudson in October. The German edition Essenz will be published by Prestel at the same time. The book and exhibit provide a glimpse into Burtynsky’s many projects and feature a selection of never-before-seen works. While almost all of the previous exhibits and publications have been limited to specific topics (mines, oil, water), various cycles will be combined with each other in the book and exhibition.
Edward Burtynsky was born in 1955 in Ontario. He studied photography and media design at Ryerson University. In his work, he explores complicated connections between nature and industry. Edward Burtynsky is considered one of the most famous and renowned photographers in Canada. His work can be found in over fifty major museums worldwide, including the National Gallery of Canada, MoMA, the Guggenheim in New York City and many others.
