Heridas - Alfredo Srur
Alfredo Srur
Latin America has been described as one of the world’s most violent regions. The causes of crime and violence are complex, yet poorly regulated urban zones are usually most susceptible to outbreaks of violence – violence both from above and from below.
This scenario describes San Fernando, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. For his series Heridas, Argentinian photographer Alfredo Srur spent eight years investigating the local social dynamics. There he met Carlos, a gang leader, who became his alter ego and the protagonist of this series. Carlos invited Srur to enter his world and to experience life through his eyes. In turn, Srur’s poetic gaze captured an intricate concurrence of harshness and affection, revealing the complexities of life on the edge of society.
Heridas, Alfredo Srur’s first solo exhibition in Europe, is a project that challenges our common assumptions about marginality. With an outstanding eye for composition and light, Srur tells us a story of broken toys, broken dreams and the tenderness that permeates the shadows of the shantytown.
