Brought to Light: Women + Culture + Work
Ellen Röhner
No longer second-tier? What are the conditions under which culturally engaged women work in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg? What would an ideal cultural establishment be like?
The exhibition portrays 25 women from the district’s colourful and multifarious cultural scene: an actress, a dancer, a gallerist, a textile artist, a painter, a musician, a circus educator, a bookseller, a museum educator and many more. There are well-known artists and women that mediate, organize and administer art and culture who are barely perceived in public. What most have in common is that they work under precarious financial conditions and have to fight to finance their projects. This exhibition ‘brings them to light’. They’ve had their portraits taken and have been questioned on their everyday lives, their experiences and their desires for structural change.
