Delving into Visual Strata

Lilly Lulay

What might seem to be a moment that would be lost to amateur photographers comes into its own in the work of Lilly Lulay. She examines photography as a technique integrated into our everyday life. Images from the internet, purchased at flea markets or given to the artist by friends are the raw materials for her works, which take on the form of collages, paintings, installations and videos. Her artistic research focuses on the technological development of photographic media and the changes in social behaviour linked to this.
One of Lilly Lulay’s new works being shown at Kuckei + Kuckei, is Liquid Portrait fbarchive19012016. The source for this two-part work was the visual contents of a friend’s Facebook account. All the image data amassed there was appropriated by the artist to reshape the personalized network of information in an analogue manner. Converting the digital image data into a video/moving collage and a delicately intertwined wall sculpture, Lilly Lulay doesn’t simply portray a person, but highlights the sheer volume of data behind a common Facebook avatar.
