With her portraits and photographs of architecture and objects made during her time at the Bauhaus, Lucia Moholy (1894 – 1989) counts among the most renowned photographers of the early twentieth century. On the other hand, her photographic work from the period following her emigration from Germany to England (1934) is barely known, although it can easily be considered a further development of her earlier work. While Moholy embarked on an exploration of her new home country in her landscape and architecture photographs, her portraits, made primarily as commissions, reveal her ability to allow the characteristic features of a personality to emerge without ever exposing the person. Her photographs from her trips to the Balkan states and the Middle East feature in the exhibition, as does her work filming for UNESCO; both stem from her estate, which has been a part of theBauhaus-Archiv Berlin since 1992. A German translation of Lucia Moholy’s standard reference work A Hundred Years of Photography, originally published in 1939, will appear in German translation for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition, together with an introduction.
