Our brains interpret facial expressions in different ways depending on whether the face is looking directly at us or not. The direction of the other’s gaze actually determines how our brain responds to the emotions expressed on the person’s face. For the same reason, every photographer selects a personal perspective from which they “record” the gaze of the person being photographed, either reflecting reality or a subjective version of it, sometimes influencing the person being photographed, and sometimes ensnared by them. This occurs because we ourselves are the other: by means of our snapshots we encounter others, reveal their identity and create imaginary archetypes that often survive a long time, by conveying the image of an irreducible emotion. The aim of Der Blick der Anderen (The View of Others) is to speak not only through images, but also through the underlying process. The images communicate emotions and provide insight into the photographer/subject relationship.
