Living Room
Can I see your home, please?
Naomi Schenck
How do people live? How do friends and strangers live? How do I live myself? These are questions that Naomi Schenck has asked since her childhood. Questions with which she scours the globe for film locations – real places where fictional stories can happen. Places that can become movie sets. In the process she encounters everyday environments where ordinary lives are being lived. Often these spaces reappear in movies, transformed into the settings of imaginary life stories. Or they are passed over and end up in the artist’s ‘room archive’. From this repository of interiors she selects individual images for their formal and compositional qualities and combines them in matching pairs, removing them from their teleological context. The photos retain the functional context of their creation as a kind of undertone, a background resonance. Living Room presents residential interiors from four continents.
