DRITTEL BOOKS
DRITTEL BOOKS
Drittel Books is a Berlin-based, independent publisher of photography books, founded in 2013 by Andreas Gehrke. Drittel does not simply publish collections of “good photographs”, preferring instead to publish bodies or series of work that explore ideas in a deeper way. Its publications are representative of its belief in photography as a medium to reflect and influence our culture and society. The name Drittel, which is German for “one third,” is inspired by the belief that no art—or artist—can truly exist alone. The creativity, production and consumption surrounding an artwork is always split, or shared, into separate processes. Books need, at the ver y least, three people: an artist, a publisher and a reader.

EASTER TROUBLE PRESS
EASTER TROUBLE PRESS
As Jim Reed himself says: Easter Trouble Press was founded in 2012, because he “wanted to feel more impor tant.” Self-publishing did a lot for his ego at first: someone wrote once about one of his books, and that felt good; another person did it, that felt even better. Like a lot of things in life though, self-publishing stopped feeling good af ter time passed. It used to feel like a special thing, but now it feels clichéd to him (and awkward, like right now while having to write the word “he” instead of “I”). He wants to be strong, like Gerhard Steidl, but he isn’t that strong. He sees other books and thinks: “Wow, that is a lot better
than anything I’ve ever made.” He sees other books and thinks: “What is this crap?” The first book he made was called Easter Trouble. He made it as a child, with no selfish intent. He wonders if he’ll ever do that kind of thing again. He hopes so. -

Kominek Books has produced publications from photographers such as Alec Soth, Viviane Sassen, Enrique Metinides and Greg Girad. Kominek Books considers the photography book a work of art: “It is the final form for a photographic work and the actual artwork of a photographer. The printed paper, layout, typography, the sequence, all this is a combination of different arts that makes the final piece of art. Why a photobook? To tell a stor y in pictures, or is it more to express ourselves in another language and not be always strictly narrative? Bookmaking is an ancient process, which is still the strongest for us when it comes to tell a stor y with documentary photography.”
