Künstlergespräch

On the occasion of the FOTOTREFF BERLIN #25, on September 29, 2018, the photographer and artist Andrea Grützner presents her work in conversation with the art historian and art consultant Julia Rosenbaum. Grützner's medium is photography, yet her projects move between various genres of art, such as photography, painting or collage. She is interested in the perception of space, her personal individual history and structural memories, as well as the visual irritation of the observer - the familiar and at the same time the unfamiliar. Among other projects, Andrea Grützner will present her most recent work HIVE (2018), share with us her fascination for buildings and her interest for memory, and ultimately guide us through the intricacies and graphic aspects of her work.

Symposium Artist Complex. Images of Artists in Photography

Panel

Keynote speaker: Prof. Dr. Bettina Gockel, Institute of Art History, University of Zurich
Concept and organization: Jadwiga Kamola, Berlin State Museums

The symposium, which accompanies the exhibition Artist Complex. Photographic Portraits from Baselitz to Warhol. Platen Collection, analyzes photographic portraits of artists in the twentieth century. Under the umbrella term of an “artist complex” we hope to develop new theoretical approaches to portraits of artists. The psychological term of the “complex” is understood as a central driving force, which determines our thoughts and actions, and which, so we argue, materializes in the moment of the photographic exposure. In this sense, the “artist complex” replicates and re-stages historically and culturally constructed ideas of an “artist”.

FOTOFINISH Photography’s Triumph as an Autonomous Art Form

Book presentation & Discussion

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Art Collection, DZ BANK has published the catalog "FOTOFINISH. Photography‘s Triumph as an Autonomous Art Form" (2018) by Snoeck-Verlag in Cologne, offering a current overview of this exceptional corporate collection, encompassing works by Richard Avedon, Sibylle Bergemann, Viktoria Binschtok, Jan Paul Evers, Nan Goldin, Raphael Hefti, Louise Lawler, Thomas Ruff, Piotr Uklanski, Cindy Shermann, Andy Warhol, and many others. As an artistic medium, photography has undergone sweeping changes over the last 50 years and has achieved impressive success. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, photography’s ascent to the Mount Olympus of art has been extraordinary, making it
the most important visual medium of our time. Yet there are questions that have remained relevant since the inception of the medium. Under what conditions can photography be considered art? What qualities set photography apart from other artistic media? What questions does the photographic medium raise? And what visual languages, concepts, and strategies have
artists developed in recent years?

In a discussion moderated by Julia Voss, Christina Leber, Head of the DZ BANK Art Collection; Kathrin Schönegg and Steffen Siegel, two of the authors of the new catalog; and Felix Hoffmann, Chief Curator of the C/O Berlin Foundation, will talk about contemporary artistic photography at the intersection with other artistic genres and in the context of conceptual approaches.

18 h | Screening
of the Shortlist-candidates of the new VONOVIA AWARD FÜR FOTOGRAFIE 2018: award.vonovia.de

This year, the advisory board of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) chose the title “Bodyfiction” to focus on the depiction of the human body in contemporary photography. A variety of exhibitions in Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna, and Luxembourg present works by a total of forty selected international artists all of whom work with the photographic reproduction of the human figure in a progressive way. EMOP will also be publishing a volume of the same name. With this symposium, the EMOP Berlin has organized the opening event for the multi-faceted investigation into the theme of the body. In short lectures and conversations with four artists, the potential of the body as a photographic motif will be discussed on a formal and thematic level. Nathalie Herschdorfer will deliver the keynote speech.

Artist talk

Guided tour

Loredana Nemes (* 1972) takes risks—and it’s time to get to know her work. An urge for discovery and women artists are high on the agenda at the Berlinische Galerie, which already owns 23 works by the ethnic Romanian art photographer. Her first solo show in an art museum comprises 120 photographs—at the center of which are portraits, poetry, and the surrealism of everyday life.

Niko Schmid-Burgk „Portraitfotografie“. Von der konzeptionellen Bildidee zum fertigen Porträt

Workshop

Dabei werden ihnen u.a. Kimberly Budinsky - Miss Austria 2016 Modell stehen.

// Dozent

Taking photographs in digital culture

Symposium

The mass dissemination of images via social media; the creation of photographs and films by means of devices not connected to the human eye; identifying, selecting, and evaluating images on the basis of algorithms—these and other factors have altered our concept of photography.
In contributions coming from both artistic and theoretical perspectives, the symposium investigates practices of producing and perceiving imagery under the conditions of digital culture. What new possibilities present themselves, and what critical questions should we be asking?

Lecture

In his various writings Goffredo Fofi, film and literary critic, journalist and writer, often dealt with the 1968 movement.
He analyzed the years before and after this period and its influence not only from a social, political but also from a cultural and artistic point of view.
Throughout the evening, Fofi's focus will be specifically on how the protests connected with the 1968 movement strongly influenced and found room in the Italian cinema.

Lecture

The photographic work of Fritz Block (1889–1955) is spanning the eras of New Photography in Europe and color photography in America. In 2017, it has been presented by the Alfred Ehrhardt Foundation in an exhibition for the first time. This project recently resulted in a voluminous monograph published by Scheidegger & Spiess, Zurich. Roland Jaeger, its author, explains the transformation of an at first unsorted estate archive into a structured, annotated and richly illustrated photo book. Aspects of photo history, book design, and printing technology will be visualized and discussed.

Author and curator Martien Frijns has recently published the book MARIA AUSTRIA 1915–1975; at the opening, he will speak about the life and work of the photographer, who documented everyday life and culture in Amsterdam after 1945: dance, theater, street scenes, and the Anne Frank House. Austria, who was educated at the Graphischer Lehranstalt in Vienna, emigrated to the Netherlands in 1937, opened a studio, worked for newspapers, and survived the war underground as a member of the resistance. Together with colleagues, she founded the Agentur Particam, today known as the Maria Austria Institute for Dutch Photographers.

The Distant Barking of dogs

Film screening

Ten-year-old Oleg lives in the eastern part of Ukraine — a warzone that often echoes with anti-aircraft fire and missile strikes. Sometimes these sounds are in the distance, while other times they’re frighteningly close. While many have already left this dangerous area, Oleg remains with his grandmother, who has taken care of him since the death of his mother. They have nowhere else to go. While waiting for the war to end, Oleg enjoys hanging out with his younger cousin Yarik and the older boy Kostia. Together they go on adventures, talk about what makes a real man, test each other’s boundaries — but sometimes they go too far. This observational film follows a year in the life of Oleg, and emphasises the warm bond he has with his grandmother. By sticking close to Oleg, The Distant Barking of Dogs shows the effect of conflict on children.

In this 2-day workshop she will create with the participants cyanotypes on textiles. In addition to the historical backround, she will explain the different approaches and implementation possibilities of this historical procedure.
The cyanotype is a traditional copying process that produces bright blue images under sunlight. The non-toxic emulsion can be applied to various image carriers such as fabric (cotton, linen, silk, etc.) by means of printed films or objects in real Prussian blue are created by UV exposure.

Artist talk

On the occasion of the exhibition »The Potemkin Village« an artist talk will take place at Kehrer Gallery with Gregor Sailer. Following Closed Cities (Kehrer 2012), Gregor Sailer’s new project once again presents actual architectural manifestations driven by political, military, and economic motives: combat training centers in the USA and Europe, faithful replicas of European cities in China, and vehicle test cities in Sweden.

BYKER

Film screening

A partly dramatised documentary built around Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s photographs of the Newcastle terraced community, demolished to make way for the Byker Wall.
Konttinen, a founder member of the Amber collective moved to Byker when the group came to NE England in 1969. She lived there until 1976, when her own flat was demolished. The film reconstructed some of the contexts, which had already gone, creating a celebration of traditional working class culture that has been widely shown to community and general audiences, as well as in planning and architecture forums. Together with Keeping Time, the film was one of Amber’s early photo films. Others created around Konttinen’s photographs include The Writing in the Sand (1991), Letters to Katja (1994), Today I’m With You (2010) and Song for Billy (2016).
The film will be shown within a retrospective show of the AMBER film and photo collective, of which the photographer is a founding member. Further short films and documentaries will be shown.

After the film screening an artist's talk will take place with the photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and the DoP Peter Roberts.
In cooperation with dok2media.

WRITING IN THE SAND

Film screening

The film evokes the magic of an urban family’s day out on the windswept beaches of north East England. It is packed with action, invention and surprise: bodiless heads sticking out of the sand; teenagers jumping in the sea fully clothed; family picnicking under a blanket. Memory and fantasy intermingle with expressions of intoxicating freedom and quizzical encounters with nature. Deeply experimental, the film was a labour of love, involving 400 photographs taken by Konttinen over 17 years. It was filmed with free camera movements and married to a complex soundtrack of beach recordings, music and poetry.

Finding Vivian Maier

Film screening

The documentary from the year 2013 narrates how the American filmmaker and author John Maloof “discovered” the photographer Vivian Maier. “The result is a fascinating portrait of an artist with an open eye, whose lens was able to gaze into the souls of strangers,” as the Berlinale info brochure wrote in 2014, when the film came in second in the Panorama Audience Prize, category documentary. The film garnered additional awards at other international festivals.

Guided tour with moderation with Prof. Matthias Leupold. Afterwards Artist talk with Sabine von Breunig and Ingo Kuzia.

Two different positions on the theme of transience and transition in places of historical importance: Sabine von Breunig photographed the decayed remnants of twentieth-century militarism in the prohibited zone of Zossen/Wünsdorf. Together, her images comprise an evocative essay on memory and forgetting. In his work, Ingo Kuzia focuses on the former training airport of the German Luftwaffe in Schönwalde/Glien as the new rises up out of the ruins. The artists offer insight into the historical and thematic foundations of their respective works.

East European Jewish human trafficking
Concentration camps for foreigners?
Alternative measures instead of deportation
The flood of East European Jews
The wave of immigrants is halted
After World War I, refugee movements from Eastern Europe meet with rejection in many areas of German politics and society—also in Bremen. Demands to close the border, to deport refugees, or to build internment camps grow louder. Widespread talk of the “flood of foreigners,” “foreign domination,” and “burdensome foreigners.” Who is “useful” and is allowed to stay, who is “burdensome” and has to go? The classifications determine the refugees’ futures.
Dramatic reading with Peter Lüchinger, Michael Meyer, Petra-Janina Schultz, Markus Seuß

From viewing the photograph to the photographic eye

Workshop

From the very beginning, photojournalists have accompanied and documented the Berlinale. Beyond the usual subject matter of film stars, photographers also talk about the fashion, zeitgeist, and everyday culture of the respective era. Participants in the workshop will investigate the production of photographic images and attempt to answer the following questions, among others: what characteristic or extraordinary situations and places, what rituals and gestures can be recognized? What roles and relationships between places, stars, and the public emerge? Where and in what form do orchestrations and interpretations take place? At the end, participants will work out their own photographic forms of presentation and representation in the group, which they will record with a digital single-lens reflex camera and present to the assembly.

Living like a rollercoaster ride

Artist talk

“The life story of the photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková is like a rollercoaster ride” wrote a Czech newspaper when a comprehensive book of the artist’s photographs and journal entries was published. In the exhibition “Schwarze Jahre” (Black Years), she tells the story of the 1970s and 1980s in Prague, where life was gray at first, but could also be exciting if you looked closer and sought out the company of outsiders, as she did. And she also recalls her time in Berlin in the shadow of the Wall, where she lived from 1985 on and made portraits, once again of people on society’s fringe.
